The Man Who Created Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective, famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to take almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science skills to solve difficult cases. The first time appeared in publication in 1887, and many people in the world today still read the adventure of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes created by Conan Doyle, a Scottish physician and writer.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born at Edinburgh on May 22, 1859 and died on July 7, 1930. He got his first education at Stonyhurst, a big Roman Catholic school in Lancashire. Then he studied medicine at Edinburgh University and became a doctor in 1885.

In Edinburgh, he was very interested in the character of one of his professors, Joseph Bell. Conan Doyle admired him because the proffesor could tell accurately everyone's job character, or disease, although the professor had not met the person. When he studied something the professor always did it down to the smallest details. Borrowing the character of Joseph Bell, Doyle created Sherlock Holmes very much like the professor.

Most of Sherlock Holmes adventures were written as short stories published in the Strand Magazine. Each short story was a whole story itself. The stories were written during Doyle's working hours as an eye specialist. He had much time to do this because only very few patients came. For Doyle, in was necessary to try to get money because what he earned from these unsuccessful at medicine, he even decided not to work as a doctor any more. He began to concentrate all his attention on writing.

Conan Doyle also wrote historical stories, The White Company, a story of Edward III's war with France. During the Boer War (1899-1902) Doyle wrote The Great Boer War in which he defended the British policy in South Africa against the Dutch Boers. For what he did he received a royal award of the title "Sir" and was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Surrey in 1902. Doyle became interested in spiritualism when one of his sons died in World War I.
